Virtual Stitch 'n Bitch

I'm a student and like to take my knittig with me to campus so I'll have something to do between classes. Right now I just have my yarn stuffed into a regular old bag, but everything keeps getting tangeld.

Does anyone have any ideas for something else I can use? I've seen "craft bag" at Hobby Lobby and stuff, but I'm on a student budget, so I don't want to spend too much money.

There's a couple things you can do.

You can save up the money and invest in a store-bought bag of some sort. Or search the internet, or eBay, or even Etsy for "knitting bag"; there's tons out there, with varying prices. Just make sure the deal you think you are getting is really a deal; check the shipping prices, not just the bag price. Some shippers overcharge an extreme amount for shipping, particularly if they are shipping USPS domestically. Check those shipping rates.  Some sellers offer free shipping if you are lucky.

You can make your own (instructions for making a basic tote bag are included in "Stitch n Bitch: the Knitter's Handbook"), and depending on your inventiveness/craftiness/skills, you can be really creative with how you go about that. From pockets galore, to "alternative" materials like duct tape, or even felted knitting.....

You can make yarn tamers from old pantyhose; just cut to size, stick the ball/skein in so that the yarn can be pulled out simply, and toss in the bag you have now. I've also seen/heard of other items being used for the same purpose, from old socks, to the little net-bags that certain fruits and veggies come in.

My knitting bag is a huge bonus tote that was given to me by my mom when she got some things at Lancome. It's sturdy, keeps my knitting in place, and it's portable. I just love it.
So, your knitting bag doesn't have to be the one you find at your LYS or craft mega mart. You can make your own, you can find a good tote at your local thrift store or Salvation Army, you can even use the reusable grocery bags that you can get for 99 cents or so at your local grocery store.

I used the reusable grocery bag for a while, and then I started using an old library tote bag I found in the back of my closet. I keep my needles and hooks, scissors, tape measure, and stitch gauge measure in the front zippered pocket, and my yarn in the bag. It works out really well so far.

I recommend a messenger bag.  I have one that holds a ridiculous amount of yarn for large projects and all my needles, st holders, and everything else great, fits perfectly into the pencil pouch.  It has a seperate file pouch that can be used for knitting books and patterns.  Perfect. 

It's neat to make your own bag, and I did, but then I decided that it was too nice (and time consuming to make!) to tote all over the place.  it's all about preference, I checked out the bags at the craft stores but they were a little grannish for my taste.  Happy shopping!
