Title: Tired of Scarves >_< Post by: PoisonedPeach on June 29, 2008, 05:47:39 AM Ok, I have knitted about 5 scarves now, all with the garter stitch. I am ready for the next lvl as it were. The problem is, the instructions start to confuse me terribly. I know how to Cast On, Bind Off, knit, purl and seed stitch, I may even be ready for increase and decrease.
But it seems that patterns go from scarves and dish rags to extremely elaborate patterns. Am I missing a step? Are there not patterns out there for something a bit more simple but not as plain as a scarf/dish rag? I appreciate the advice in advance! -Peach ^_^ Title: Re: Tired of Scarves >_< Post by: purl gurl on June 29, 2008, 02:15:25 PM There's some pretty simple shawls that you can knit. They're bigger than scarves, but still safe enough to try.

If you've just been doing garter st then I would recommend that you try ribbing. Ribbing is fun, easy and gives nice texture. Also, if you want a little variation of ribbing then you can cast on an odd number of stitches and knit the first st, then continue in 2X2 ribbing (or whatever number ribbing you want) until the end. Turn the work and repeat first row for desired length. It makes a slightly more masculine scarf and it's a little thicker. Yarn over scarves are fun too. There are some nice free patterns on the net for them. Best knitting Title: Re: Tired of Scarves >_< Post by: MiniPig on December 30, 2008, 02:38:56 PM I'd only made scarves until recently. I would recommend starting on a smal-ish project so you can get the hang of it, also you get that great sense of achievement from finishing a project a lot quicker. iPod/mobile phone holders are quick and easy to make. The "ribbed for her pleasure scarf" in the Knitters Handbook is quite fun to do if you were looking for soemthing more interesting but still in the scarf field. At present I'm knitting this: http://www.helloyarn.com/miniskulltote.htm I've never done intarsia before but it's coming along quite well. Bags and so on are good, and there are loads of free patterns on the internet. There's also a headscarf in the Knitters Handbook which will help you with decreasing, that's always worth doing if you get a chance, for the practise. Good luck!
