Title: Beer Glove Confusion Post by: phantomspaz on August 09, 2008, 02:49:24 PM I'm planning on knitting the Beer Gloves for my boyfriend as a Christmas present. I'm currently working on the Uncle Argyle Scarf for him, so I haven't started them yet, but I've looked over the pattern and I have some questions.
1) When you finish a "round" on one of the needles, how do you knit it the next time around? Do you pull the needle through so it's on the same side as the first time you knit? 2) The thumb opening confuses me. You only knit 7 stitches with the waster yarn, but when you go back to knit the thumb you have to pick up the "bottom 7 and top 8." Where does that 8th stitch come from? It makes no sense! Also, how do you connect the rounds on the thumb? It says "Pm," but that doesn't really make sense. Do you connect them the same way you did the cuff? If someone has pictures of the thumb being worked, it would be great, but any information would help. Thanks. Title: Re: Beer Glove Confusion Post by: jroosa on September 27, 2008, 10:47:14 PM I am working on these gloves now. I agree that some of the instructions are confusing. Here is a picture of the glove with a placeholder for the thumb. If I am doing this right, when I remove the waste yarn I will pick up stitches on two sides and have a thumb hole. Hope this helps.

I'm planning to knit a pair of beer gloves, since I finally stumbled upon the exact yarn needed in a color I love. But in looking at photos of what other people have done, it appears that the cable pattern in the book is probably wrong. Many of the gloves done from the pattern look great, but have only 4-5 cable repeats up the back of the hand. The book photo has 6 or 7, so the pattern must be compressed somehow. I've been hunting on the internet for patterns with no luck. Now I plan to go the library for a stitch pattern book for a cable pattern that's closer to that pictured in Son of SNB, then follow it. Where is the author of the pattern when you need him? Hey, Kurt! How about a note about the problems with cable pattern? 8 rows don't make a 12 row repeat. And then there is the problem with the thumb, and stitches that don't add up. Perhaps the answer is to find another fingerless glove pattern and then incorporate a cable pattern and the seed stitch palm. But, if I have to do all this, what did I buy the book for? Please, Debbie Stoller, we need errata for the book! (p.s.: thank you for the pattern for the Antler Scarf. It worked great, and my Dad loves it.) Using some Merino DK yarn and knitting a gauge swatch, I tried doing the cable pattern with a shorter repeat (i.e. fewer knit rows). If you do Row 1 & 2 Knit, Row 3 Cable as in the pattern, Row 4, 5 & 6: Knit, you get 6 rows which can be repeated to produce about 7 cables on the back of the hand. Gauge is 32 Rows = 4 inches or 8 rows per inch, so with the hand length of 5 inches (7 1/2 minus 2 1/2 cuff), 40 rows will yield 7 cables, which is what is depicted in the book photo. The two photos posted by other knitters show beautiful gloves, but only 4-5 cables, and the SNB photo shows 7 cables up the back of the hand. Compressing down to 3 knit rows between cable rows seems too compressed, and this interpretation requires only a change from the instructions to show Rows 4 to 6 instead of 4 to 8, and the 6 can be doubled for a 12 row repeat. If we assume that the typo printed "8" instead of "6," this one change gives us the number of cables shown, and also seems to agree with the instructions to repeat for rnds 1-12 for pattern. This is just a guess, and I welcome other advice before starting the project.
