So there is not a thread on here about spinning yarn, at least not that I am aware.  Do any of you spin?  I was just at the Midwest Fiber and Folk Art Fair, and there was a vendor selling drop spindle kits with a bood and roving and a spindle.  I just read a couple of how-to's online, and think that I am in big trouble...as if I didn't have enough problems controlling my yarn purchases and WIPs!!  Now I run the risk of developing another yarn related obsession!  Wish me luck...I will blog about this later this weekend, when I see how much I spin today!

I wish you luck.  I have wanted to look into it ,but I am afraid I will not have any control. I recently pick up one of those needle felt kits and I can see that going crazy.  I can wait to hear how it goes, I might just do it anyway.

Yeah, that's something I've been very tempted by - and afraid of - as well...  There's even a spinners' weekly get together where I live.  Must...  resist...

well...I thought that I would have some spinning product to show off...but it is really frustrating!  I tried for about 2 hours yesterday and I got about 3 yards spun, then it broke!  I tried again, and it broke again!  So I put it in timeout to be addressed in a few days...I do see though how it can become a serious problem!

oh dear.  I believe I have been seduced.  I was reading through the Knitty archives yesterday and stumbled across the handspun silk.  Now I'm seriously considering raising silkworms sometime in the future! Oh dear.  I must regain control.

I keep thinking about hand dyed and spun sock yarn, etc. The thought of the playing with color you could do with spinning keeps going through my head. I think I need to go dig out my drop spindle toningt and have another go - maybe I can talk the troops into getting mom a spinning wheel for Christmas.......

shewolfy, have you been spinning long?  I am learning on a drop spindle, but am very frustrated with the way it is going and the breakage I had.  I think that I am putting too much twist in the leader and pulling too hard on it while trying to get it spun.  There is a LYS that does a lot of spinning stuff, and one of my knitting circle girls keeps telling me to go and get help from them...they are just a little far for me though to just drop in and ask for help.  Hmmm...we will see though!  I would love the learn to spin on a wheel.

I have played with it off and on for years, but not very consistantly. I have pretty good luck spinning yarn that is still in the grease - it still has the lanolin in it and clings together better. I actually still have a small hank of yarn I spun and plied out of the greasy yarn (It sounds gross, but really it isn't.) When I try to spin the lovely colored rovings that I really want to play with, I too have breakage problems. I think it is a matter of being patient with it and getting the spin right. Maybe I'll dig it out this evening and give it another go. If you have a LYS that will help - by all means go! (And let me know what you find out....) Grin

I've been spinning for 15 years.  Just recently I've begun to sell my handspun on Etsy and some shows.  What almost made me give up in the beginning was the development of timing.  I had to take a 2 hour course far away from home and everything   was downhill after that.  Sometimes it just takes someone to guide you a little.  I now spin Merino, Cormo, Alpaca, Llama, mohair, angora.  The better you get, the finer your resulting yarn will be. If you don't like it super fine (lace weight), you can always ply it.
Raw fleece is not hard to find now, either.  By you washing it, a lot of lanolin stays in the yarn.  That's always nice if you have dry hands, etc.  Persevere - you won't be dissapointed
