Why must you make such beautiful yarn?  I'm a total Celtophile, so of course as soon as I saw real Donegal Chunky Tweed in deep, wine red, I knew I had to make my ribbed-for-her-pleasure scarf out of it.  But $12.99 a skein!!!  I seem to have expensive taste in yarn, so far...yowza.  2 out of 3 skeins for my garter-stitch scarf are Rowan Big Wool, at $15 a skein.   Shocked  Is it possible to get the same quality yarn at lower prices???

Yeah. Brands like Patons, Bernat, and Lion Brand are making some great quality yarn, at very low prices.

I'm the opposite-I'm a bit of a cheapskate, so I'll find a similar yarn for the ones that I see in the yarn shop.

knitpicks.com has really great quality stuff and is very affordable compared to the knitting stores.  Also check out elann.com.

Thanks for the tips.  If I'm not careful, this habit could get really expensive, huh?

The stuff like Patons, Lion Brand, and Bernat is okay, but they are not nearly in a class with the Debbie Bliss yarns. One feel is all it takes to find this out. If you are looking for a good yarn at a lower price, then go with something like Knitpicks. And yes, the habit can get a wee bit pricey. Some of us help pay for our little yarn habit by working part-time in our LYS. (It does help, some. Sometimes it makes it worse...)

Knitpicks has good deals, and also check Web's (yarn.com) frequently, they always have really excellent closeouts.

I actually just peeked, and they carry a ton of Debbie Bliss. They are having some really good sales at the moment, too. http://yarn.com/webs/0/0/0/0-1001-1294-1323/0/13/

I got some of that Silk Aran, and it was gorgeously soft to work with.

Hey, great website!  Ooh, that silk aran looks beautiful!  I had found Knitpicks (yeah, I could spend a lot of money there) but I hadn't seen Webs yet.  Thanks for the tips!

Bernat is now making some qaulity yarns for low prices. They make a wonderful bamboo based yarn. And they make some wonderfuill wool based yarns.
And Patons make some great wool yarns, too.
