I've just discovered the delights of sock knitting. I've heard pure wool tends to wear out very quickly so what yarn brand is best for endurance but still looks good?

I always use a regular sock yarn. They are usually a wool blend and (gentle) machine washable. I also use a reinforcing fiber on the hee flap and toe. The reinforcer I use is made by Skacel and is even smaller than fingering weight - maybe closer to a lace weight, but is specifically made to reinforce socks at wear points. Welcome to the addiction of socks!

I'm cheap, and that affects my yarn choices. That said, Lion's Magic Stripe yarn is sock weight, a washable wool/nylon blend, and I haven't destroyed a sock made with it yet. Also -- self-striping = love. I also like the Knitpicks sock yarns; inexpensive, wear like iron, and make gorgeous socks.

I'm partial to knitpicks.com too.  I've been dipping into the high end/expensive ones a bit though and Koigu is incredible!

Get a sock yarn that has a little (7%) elastic built into it. Your sox will bounce back to shape after washing.  I never put hand-made sox in the dryer - even superwash gets affected.
