I just started the Look Sharp Socks.  I've never knitted with elastic yarn before and it's been fun so far.  I'm now at the point where I'm supposed to be switching colors.  The problem is I just can't figure out how to work the "Second Tier of Motifs" section.  I've tried to work it out several ways:

Do I PU 13 stitches along the side of the first triangle (the side opposite Needle 1)?  If that's the case I think I need a sixth needle to do the first block.  My other concern is that there are only 11 obvious places to pick up stitches.  On the plus side the last stitch in Row 2 is right at the base of Needle 4, so that I can combine them.

Do I work the stitches on Needle 1?  There are 13 stitches on that needle and I don't need a sixth needle to work that side.  The problem is that I'll never get over to needle four if I'm working off needle 1.

Any insight into how this is supposed to work would really be appreciated!

Figured out this one on my own, thought I'd share the fix.  The trick is to use the fifth needle to pick up the stitches on the needless side of the first triangle and the fourth needle to knit.  You do that thirteen times.  When you finish with row one you'll have 13 MC stitches and 13 CC stitches on your forth needle.  After that rows two and three are easy.

I have to admit that the only reason I figured this one out was because I stopped paying attention to what I was doing.  I had put all the stitches from a different triangle on a stitch holder to free up another needle to work the triangle on the first needle.  Well, at some point I realized I was holding two empty needles in my hand.  It took me a second to figure out what happened but as soon as I did all the instructions in the book made sense.

Good luck to everyone, these are starting to look like really cool socks!

Hey there... just joined this site.  I'm the author of these socks...glad to see you figured it out. Sometimes writing the pattern it is a bit challenging to actually translate it to action....

As an aside, I actually never detach the colors I'm using, I carry each one (after you complete one tier, when you are picking up the stitches to begin the next tier, carry the not-in-use color up, weaving it much as you would if you were knitting with two colors in a row.   That way when you finish your new tier, the next color will be sitting in the right place for you to begin the next tier...at which point you would repeat the step above.

This way, when you are finished with the socks...you only have two ends to weave in...the first stitch at cast on, and the tail when you are done!
