I like the "spirit" of the SnB knitting and crochet books.  Debbie's writing style and the eclectic mix of projects made learning both crafts heaps of fun.  I can't sew and would like to learn, but have yet to come across a book that doesn't make my eyes glaze over and leave my brain feeling frazzled after reading a few pages.  Any chance we might see a SnB one in the future?

I think that is a great idea...I am the same...don't really know how to sew...I got a sewing machine for my bday, and have yet to use it!   Sad  I checked out several sewing books from the library, and I agree, not so interesting, and some assume a asic knowledge of sewing...I did like "Sew U" though because it came with patterns and with modification options for these patterns...I never bought the book though.  I am moving home for a while, and am going to comission my mom to teach me to use my new machine and maybe make some super simple projects to get the feel for it.

Thanks for the heads up on this book.  I've just got my hands on a copy and have started reading through it.  (I've also ordered a book called "Sewing for Dummies", which sounds promising!)

I still hope Debbie will bring out her own "how to sew" book ...

BRILLIANT IDEA!!! I got a sewing machine for Christmas and it is still in the box... and I'm not talking about x-mas 2007 unfortunately.... I would love to sew, but like others have said, all the books I've found are boring and don't get me sewing fast enough to keep me motivated. Debbie's books get me so excited about the projects, I'm willing to learn whatever skills necessary to get that finished product. So please please please Debbie - help us out!

One sewing book I highly recommend is Sew Everything Workshop by Diana Rupp. Her book is just fantastic and takes you really through all the steps you need -- from fabric, sewing machines, pattern reading . Plus it's got a whole bunch of really cool projects. I don't think I could do any better than that!

Debbie:  My belated and long overdue thanks for this book recommendation.  I bought me a copy and am reading it from cover to cover before attempting any of the projects.  I think this is the book that is finally going to make a confident and able sewer out of me.  Everything you've said about it is right on.

My first and brand-spanking new sewing machine sits before me and waits patiently ...

Thanks again, Debbie.

Hey, glad to hear it! I really love Diana's book! IF you are anywhere near the NYC region, you can take classes directly from her at NYC's hippest sewing (and crafting) school, Make Workshop, which she runs.
