Hello there!

The Happy Hooker book waxes lyrical about worsted weight yarn, and how popular it is, but I'm having real trouble finding a similar weight here in the UK. I found a really nice aran weight yarn for the PDQ, and turned it into a hat that was even too small for my tiny head. So I tried again with a larger hook, crocheting looser, but still no luck. Tried another pattern, same problem! So I did a bit of research, and by comparing length/weight, found that a lot of arans are thinner than worsted weight, but a lot of chunky yarns are thicker than worsted weight.

On top of that, aran doesn't seem to be a very popular type of yarn around here, you can get a lot more in DK, and that's even thinner ...

What also confuses me is that some worsted weight yarns in the book look much thicker than others. How does that work?

Now what? There are all these delish patterns with my name on it, and I can't find the yarn! Importing it from the US is a teensy bit too expensive ...

I am completely with you on this!! However, I do have one solution. I found a company which sells Lion brand wool in the UK. If you go to http://www.banyantreeyarns.com/ I have bought lots of wool from them and they have worsted weight (because they are from US). It won't work for all patterns, but I have made several of the patterns which called for worsted weight substituting Lion brand and they have worked well.

You could also try looking on e-bay - there seems to be quite a lot of wool on there. The only issue there, is that you don't have the choice of colours, but it is another solution. Good luck!
